A variation on the game of squash is starting to grow in popularity across Auckland, with Racketball (aka Squash57) seeing increased player numbers enjoying this relatively new sport at a number of clubs. The recent annual Packer Cup charity tournament held at the North Shore Squash Club saw 16 teams of 3 players competing, with representation from six Auckland clubs and two from Waikato.
Played with a bouncier ball and modified rackets with a shorter handle, Racketball is perfect for new players who are able to get rallies going straight away, and also older players who enjoy the bouncier ball with less stress on the body. More competitive players can also enjoy the action with different balls available to lower the bounce and speed the game up, much like the range of traditional squash balls.
Squash Auckland are assisting clubs with running Racketball demo nights, which are open to the public to come along and try the game for free. Rackets and balls will be provided, and the evenings will be run by experience Racketball players who will be able to share some tips and tricks on how it varies from your regular squash match.
Keep an eye out for a Racketball Demo Night at a club near you!
